Our Story


How We Started

BayCo, Inc. in Hayward, CA was founded by George Zuriakat. George had a few years of experience in the food industry due to the time he spent working in a supermarket in Chicago. In 1984, he decided that the Bay Area in California was where he wanted to live and start his own produce business.

Fortunately for George, a friend warned him that starting a produce business was too risky, primarily because of the extremely short shelf life of fruits, vegetables, and other agricultural products. George’s friend advised him to sell eggs instead.

George took his friend’s advice and started Bay Area Dairy Inc. He rented a house, sublet the rooms to tenants, and made the garage his company’s headquarters. At the start, George did almost everything for the business. He was the owner, buyer, salesman, warehouseman, and delivery person.

Within a few short years, Bay Area Dairy Inc. grew from a small, garage-based business to a company with a 9,000 sq. ft. warehouse in Hayward, CA.

George also expanded his product line. Apart from eggs, he also began offering many basic bakery items, including:

  • Fillings
  • Flour
  • Frozen Fruits
  • Nuts
  • Raisins
  • Seeds
  • Shortening
  • Sugar
  • Yeast

Our company’s fleet of trucks was retooled with refrigeration units to ensure the quality of its temperature-sensitive products.

The success of Bay Area Dairy Inc. was due to its outstanding customer service and commitment to offering quality products at competitive prices.

In 2011, BayCo, Inc. moved into its current facility: a modern, clean, 38,000 sq. ft. warehouse with 72,000 cu. ft. of freezer and refrigerator space. Our company became food safety-certified with AIB that same year. We received our GFSI-BRC Storage and Distribution certification in 2017.
